Bikram Yoga

Bikram: the original hot yoga series

Founded by our guru, Bikram Choudhury, Bikram Yoga is a 90-minute beginners-series Hatha Yoga practice. Bikram Yoga incorporates breath, strength, challenge, patience, determination and compassion. One of the fundamental pieces of the practice is the tourniquet effect. This technique involves stretching, squeezing and massaging internal organs and flushing out the cardiovascular system in order to help heal the body. In a three-year study at the Tokyo University Hospital, Bikram helped doctors prove that this yoga series regenerates tissues and thus helps address chronic ailments.

The Practice

The practice involves 26 Hatha Yoga postures and two breathing exercises completed in a specific sequence at each class. The practice room is heated to 40 degrees Celsius with 40% humidity. Each class is 90 minutes to accommodate these postures and maximize the benefits to practitioners. Removing even one posture decreases the benefits you receive from completing the entire sequence.
Why Bikram Yoga is different

  • History: With over 40 years of history, Bikram Yoga uses 26 postures and two breathing exercises taken from the 4000-year-old 84 Classic Asanas. These postures are not modified, and they are taught in their original form.
  • Consistency: The same postures are taught in the same sequence in the same temperature every time. This allows you to experience the evolutions and changes in your body. The yoga is the constant, while you continue to change.
  • Teacher expertise: Rigorous training with mandatory re-certification every three years, along with the Two Sisters Bikram Yoga studio in-house education program.
  • Twenty-six and two method: The series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises is like a prescription for health. The series systematically works through your entire body unlike any other form of workout. That’s why we do not change or modify the postures. Each posture moves into another and builds upon the next in a sequence designed to optimize the effect on your body and systems as a whole.
  • Scientific studies support therapeutic yoga benefits for this specific series.
